COLUMBUS – The Dilue Rose Harris Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) welcomed local historian and author Roger Wade to speak for their November meeting.
Wade’s presentation was on Sears kit homes built locally in the early 1900s.
All materials would be iden- tified, marked, and assembled in a kit to be shipped by railcar, making Columbus an ideal spot for delivery. The home would then be built on site, somewhat like a jigsaw puzzle by the purchaser, now the new homeowner. These kits ranged from simple basic structures to the massive 2900-square-foot, Magnolia. We are quite fortunate to have some great examples around the county.
