Hallettsville beats Rice in girl's basketball

The Rice High School girl’s basketball team went down to Hallettsville High School Jan. 14 at Raiders Gym by a final score of 56-18. Rice was able to keep it within a reasonable margin early, then Hallettsville took the game over with their shot mak- ing and transition offense to win the game handedly.

“We went on a little stretch right there where we kept it close because we played defense," said Rice head girl’s basketball coach Reagan Beal. “Our thing is, we just got to learn how to play de- fense the whole four quarters. We know that we're not very offen sively talented, but we can make up for it on defense and we just got to get that part down.”

Hallettsville had a 22-8 lead with about four and a half min utes to go in the second quar- ter before sophomore shooting guard Lia Becerra was fouled on

a three-pointer and went on to hit two free throws to make it 2410. Junior point guard Beautiful Johnson added one free throw of her own for a 24-11 scoreboard right after, which was followed by a short jumper from the Brah -

manettes to take a 26-11 lead at halftime.

Hallettsville separated themselves in the third quarter with four baskets in a row on a short basket, two free throws, a three, and a fast break layup to take a 35-11 lead with 3:45 to go, which was answered by a fast break layup and a couple free throws from Johnson for Rice to put it at 35-16.

Rice added a put back layup on their next possession to keep their scoring streak going for a 38-18 end to the third quarter in favor of Hallettsville, then the Brahmanettes rolled in the fourth quarter, not allowing Rice to score a point en route to a 5618 win.
