BASTROP Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative awarded scholarships to 160 graduating high school seniors across the cooperative’s 14-county service area, totaling $400,000.
The $2,500 Scholarships of Excellence will help these students achieve their goal of earning college degrees or a trade-and-technical certificate.
“Congratulations to the stu- dents who earned a Bluebon net scholarship this year, and thanks to all the outstanding, hard-working students who participated in the application process,” said General Manager Matt Bentke. "One of Bluebon net’s values is supporting and investing in the communities in which we live and serve. Awarding these scholarships supports these students who will continue to give back to their communities.”
Nearly 300 graduating high school seniors submitted scholarship applications this year.
Applications were submitted in March, and scholarships were awarded in April. Scholarships were awarded based on the students’ academic achievement, community service and leadership, work experience and extracurricular activities, awards, honors and essay.

Money for scholarships does not come from Bluebonnet members’ bill payments or rates.
Scholarships of Excellence are funded through Bluebonnet's Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament and unclaimed capital credit payments to former mem- bers that are returned to Blue bonnet from the State of Texas to be used for scholarships.
Bluebonnet Electric Cooper ative is one of the largest electric cooperatives in Texas and has been serving its members since 1939.
