BRENHAM — The Fayetteville High School baseball team went up against Fayette County opponent Round Top-Carmine May 22 at Fireman’s Park in Brenham and won two games out of a best of three series for a trip to the state semifinals.
Fayetteville had an 11-run lead in the bottom of the fifth inning in the first game and won by a final score of
15-0, scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Lions kept their bats going in the second game and won by a final of 20-0.
“As far as the offense is concerned, we’re pretty tough,” said Fayetteville head baseball coach Clint Jaeger. We got a really good lineup. If everybody goes up there with a good approach and not try to do too much, they're tough outs. I actually think we can do better. Going to the state tournament, it’s gonna be a little different this year because the next round’s not at Dell Diamond. It'll be inter - esting. We got a very good team to play. It'll be a real good matchup."
Fayetteville senior Lawson Fritsch came up with some big hits in game two and has hit the ball well in
general as of recent. "I'm looking forward to
just the atmosphere and everything,” Fritsch said
on the state tournament. "We've made it back-to-
back-to-back and hopefully this year we can just bring home the gold."
Round Top had a very successful season in just year one under a new head coach.
“First credit goes to those guys over there,” said Round Top-Carmine head baseball coach Ben Ahrens.
“They got a fantastic pro-
gram over there. We wish them nothing but the best.
For my guys here at Round Top-Carmine, second time in school history we’ve made it to the regional fi - nals. They've realized that if we just relax and play good baseball, good things happen. I couldn't be more proud of them. We played some good ball clubs. We ran into a buzzsaw over there. More credit to them. We've seen it, we know what it’s like, and now we’re
gonna have a great offsea- son. We're gonna use it as motivation to get past the regional finals."
After putting on a show in the first game, Fayette ville did the exact same thing in the second game as they scored three runs in the first inning on a few walks, a few pass balls, a couple stolen bases, and a base hit.
Round Top threatened to answer in their first at bat on a botched ball and a walk from freshman Facundo Cerda, then Fayetteville continued to pour it on with six runs scored in the sec- ond inning.
This was followed by another six runs scored in the next inning on a bunch of walks, a base hit from Easton Jaeger, a triple from Jack Schley, two doubles,
two steals, and an infield hit to take a 15-0 lead.
The Lions added the rest of their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a triple, four walks, two field er’s choice plays, a double, and some more base hits to make it 20-0.
Fayetteville went on to strikeout the next three bat- ters in the top of the fifth in -
ning to win by mercy rule.
Fayetteville played Brookeland High School May 28 and tonight, Thursday, May 29, then Friday, May 30 for game three if necessary at Huntsville High School with each game being played at 7 p.m.
