HUNTSVILLE — After winning the first game of the series, Fayetteville wasdefeated by Brookeland High School in the second game by a final score of 3-2 at Huntsville ISD May 29.
A big inning from Brookeland propelled them later in the game and the Lions came up with a big rally in their final at bat, then fell
just a run short in order for Brookeland to even the series.
“We were never down,” said Fayetteville head baseball coach Clint Jaeger.
“I know their pitcher was pretty dominating, but we knew we could just get a few runners on base and get them out of the game. We just kept going at it and unfortunately it was enough, but our guys fought hard and they played a great game. That’s two talented teams and that’s the way these games should be. They should all be one run games. It was a great game.”
Brookeland scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning on a base hit to right field, a steal, a sacrifice bunt, and a double down the left field line.
They ended up scoring more in the same inning with another double to make it 2-0.
The Wildcats scored again in their next at bat on a walk, sacrifice bunt, a double to right field, and a pass ball.
This was their final run of the game and Fayetteville was held scoreless until their last at bat as they made a two out rally on a base hit to right field from Dylan Henneke, a triple to right
field from Jack Winford, and a grounder to shortstop from Lawson Fritsch that resulted in a wild throw to put the scoreboard at 3-2.
Brookeland was able to record a strikeout for the last out and a 3-2 final score. Fayetteville went on to win the third game of the series by a final score of 3-1 on May 30.
The Lions will play Gordon High School Saturday, June 7 at 9 a.m. at Dell Diamond in Round Rock in the UIL State Baseball Championship game.
