etteville High School baseball team traveled to Hunstville ISD for the state semifinals and de feated Brookeland High School in the first game of a three game series May 28 by a final score of 1-0. A pitching duel for it’s majority led to a bases loaded rally for the Lions in the sixth inning, which ended up winning them the game after getting the job done on the mound once again to close out the game. “It’s crucial,” said Fayetteville head baseball coach Clint Jaeger on winning the first game of a three game series.
“It kind of puts you in the driver’s seat and a lot of pressure’s on them then. They’re a really good team, so I’m sure they won’t feel that pressure too much. We’ll just get after it tomorrow. It was a well-pitched game by both guys. Both guys pitched their butt off. We were just able to capitalize on one of their mistakes. There was one error in the game and it’s the one run that scored, so we were able to capitalize.”
Fayetteville pitcher Jack Schley has been superb on the mound throughout the entire year and pitched another gem for this game. “I’ve been pumped up for this game all season,” Schley said. “I’ve been looking forward to it. This game was kind of personal because they did beat us in basketball in the regional finals this year, so we were looking for some revenge. We were all pumped up this game.”
It was a scoreless game with elite pitching from both teams all the way until the bottom of the sixth inning when Fayetteville scored their first and only run
on a grounder to third base from Easton Jaeger that was botched, a walk from Schley, a wild pitch, an intentional walk, and a walk from freshman Kandon Kaspar that walked in a run to put the score at 1-0. Brookeland threat- ened in their final at bat with a base hit to left field and a stolen second base on a pass ball, but two pop-out bunts to the catcher and a strikeout sealed the game for Fayetteville at 1-0.
