Legendary Weimar softball head coach Roger Maupin announced last month that he is retiring after 24 years at Weimar.
Maupin won four state titles at the helm in seven appearances and also had success as a basketball coach, winning one state title in four appearances with an overall record of 407-167 in 14 years at Weimar and two years at Anderson-Shiro.
“We’ve had a really good run,” said Maupin on his retirement.
“Things just kind of fell into place. I think it’s a good time. Coaching takes a lot of time. I’ve missed a lot with my kids, so I didn’t want to do the same with my grandkids. I just kind of decided that now would be a good time. Coach (Dylan) Conway coming in, I know he’s gonna do a good job.” In softball terms, Maupin had an overall record of 528-214-9 in 21 years at Weimar and made 14 regional final ap pearances with 11 of them being in the last 12 years.
“The community is different,” Maupin continued. “I was told that when I first came here and that's definitely true. Expec tations are really high. My very first move here was an unbeliev able group. They bought into what we were doing. Here we are 24 years later and it’s been a great run.”
Maupin had tons of success at Weimar, but he also did it with class and integrity. Whoever replaces Maupin is going to have some big shoes to fill as he's a great coach as well as a great
