CALDWELL — Schulenburg baseball’s outstanding season came to an end May 31 as they fell to Centerville High School by a final score of 1-0 at Caldwell High School Baseball Field in the
third and final game of the series. Centerville rallied in their first at bat and Schulenburg’s bats went cold for the entire contest as Centerville’s one run at the beginning is what decided the outcome.
“It was a great ride with these seniors, man,” said Schulenburg head baseball coach Isaiah Bar- rera. "Started off 0-7, finished in the state semifinals one run away.
Connor Lichnovsky pitched his butt off today, just never got the sticks rolling.”
Centerville scored their first and only run in their first at bat on two base hits and two walks. Schulenburg’s Zane Brenek started things for the Shorthorns in the top of the second inning after a hit to right field and eventually advanced to second, but Centerville was able to get out of the the inning on a fly out, ground out, and strikeout.
Schulenburg was able to get some more runners on base throughout the game, but couldn’t capitalize by batting the runners in. Ian Reeves was able to get on base with a walk for Schulenburg in the top of the seventh inning, then a ground out and two strikeouts led to Centerville wrapping up the game for a final score of 1-0.
