WEIMAR — What is pocket change to some these days, it was a life-savings for Marvin Gilbreath when he arrived in Weimar in 1938. He had only 15 cents and no job. With no luck for a permanent job, he became his own boss with buying and selling chickens and eggs.
In 1940, Gilbreath bought a small produce company, and selling feed and supplies to farmers. From there, he had the forethought to start his own feed mill grinding feed he bought from local farmers. He purchased a site for his M-G Farmer Service Center in 1943 and converted an old cotton warehouse near downtown into a feed plant where it operated for many years. Within a few years, Gilbreath parlayed his 15 cents into a million dollar business.
In 1965, Gilbreath sold his controlling interest in the business and it has since expanded to a feed mill situated on Interstate 10 in Weimar and the farm store in downtown Weimar. Anybody who goes to Weimar will go to the M-G Farm Store for farm and ranch supplies, lawn and garden, hardware and pet supplies, sporting goods and food products. Many ranchers still rely on the massive feed mill for their livestock feeds.
