Columbus Historical Preservation Trust Inc. secures $200,000 Matching Gift

Stafford Opera House repair and restoration project nears $1 million funds raised

COLUMBUS — The Columbus Historical Preservation Trust Inc. (CHPT), reached a major funndraising milestone this march, completing a dollar-for dollar challenge issued by the Wintermann Foundation, which unlocked a $200,000 donation.

"We're incredibly grateful to the Wintermann Foundation for their continued support," said CHPT Interim President Julie Prause. “This marks their second generous contribution to our efforts to restore the historic Stafford Opera House." The first gift came early in CHPT's Save Our Opera House capital campaign, when the Foundation awarded $20,000 after a successful matching fundraiser. In October 2024, Wintermann Foundation President Jack Johnson offered an additional $200,000 match, payable if CHPT could raise an equal amount by March 31, 2025.

CHPT responded with gusto, launching the Seasons of Colorado County photo book campaign, the 2025 Membership Drive, two online auctions, and a massive donor outreach effort spearheaded by former Executive Director Melissa "Missy" Parker. "In all, we raised $315,000 in six months. This is an incredible amount for CHPT, and we are very proud of the outcome of the campaign," said Prause.

"I am very pleased with the successful matching funds CHPT has raised", said Johnson. "I have seen many successful matching campaigns, but this was one of the best. Truly a remarkable achievement." Since launching the Save Our Opera House campaign in late 2023, CHPT has raised nearly $1 million. Completed restoration projects include a full elevator modernization with period-style interior, structural masonry repairs, exterior painting, and third-floor bathroom renovations for performers and crew. Current projects include roof repairs and HVAC upgrades to the Grand Hall, with additional restrooms slated for construction this summer.

“This milestone is a testament to the community's commitment to restoring the Stafford Opera House," said Prause. "The Wintermann Foundation's belief in our mission, along with the tireless work of our board and volunteers, is moving this project forward for the benefit and betterment of the entire community."
