Austin County Sheriff Jack W. Brandes reminds public about back-to-school safety

As the new school year begins, Austin County Sheriff Jack W. Brandes reminds all drivers to stay alert and follow state laws as school buses and student foot traffic return.

Drivers are required by law to stop for school buses when red lights are flashing or the stop arm is extended.

This applies to traffic in both directions, unless a raised median or physical barrier divides the roadway. A center turn lane does not qualify as a barrier or median.

Failing to stop can result in fines of up to $1,250, and repeat offenses may lead to driver’s license suspension.

In school zones, drivers must obey posted speed limits when lights are flashing, avoid using cell phones (it is illegal in active zones), and know that fines are often enhanced or doubled.

The Austin County Sheriff’s Office urges everyone to drive re sponsibly and help keep students safe this school year.

STOP MEANS STOP!
