Bellville Brahma football handles Ft. Bend Crawford on homecoming

BELLVILLE — The Bellville High School football team took care of business on homecoming night Sept. 12 at Brahmas Stadium in Bellville by defeating Ft. Bend Crawford High School by a final score of 36-16.

A dominant first half from Bellville led to Ft. Bend making it close in the second half, but the Brahmas were able to add some insurance scores later in the game to win by a comfortable margin.

“We got banged up and we had a lot of guys really step up,” said Bellville head football coach Grady Rowe. “We’ve got three out for the year and already had some guys filling in. We had some guys that filled in so I’m really proud of that. We had guys step up when they had to and they didn’t have a choice. They did a good job stepping up and help us get this victory.”

Brahmas junior running back Don Gillum added two big touchdowns on the night to give his team a spark.

“Just come in and execute,” Gillum said on his performance. “That’s really it.”

Gillum made an interception to start the game in the first two minutes and took it to Crawford’s 30 yard line, which resulted in a run up the middle from senior running back Kendrick Turner for two yards at the 6:17 mark to make it 7-0. Bellville scored again with 41 seconds to go for the fi - nal points of the first quarter to put it at 14-0 on another run up the middle, this time from junior running back Travis Turner for five yards.

The Chargers respond- ed with a 35-yard field goal about midway through the

second quarter, then Bellville closed out the half with a five-yard touchdown run from Davin Sodolak after a long catch from Gillum to go into the locker room with a 21-3 lead at halftime.

Gillum scored the only points of the third quarter on a 10-yard pitch play with 3:39 to go after an effective drive with their run game from the Brahmas and notched a two-point conversion on a run play to go along with it, then Crawford answered right back with a strong running possession of their own in the first 30 seconds of the fourth quarter to make it 29-10.

Crawford followed that up with a deep ball down the field at the 6:12 mark for 84 yards and a touchdown to make it 29-16, which led to Gillum scoring his second touchdown of the night about three minutes later for 15 yards on a run to the outside left to seal the game at 36-16.
