Community Journalism Workshop announced

SCHULENBURG - The League of Women Voters of South Central Texas announc es registration is now open for 'Community News Writing: A Community Journalism Workshop.'

This four-week program is designed to equip participants with the skills needed to contribute meaningful stories to local newspapers as volunteer community journalists.

The course will meet on four Monday evenings – Oct.

27, Nov. 10, Nov. 24, and Dec.

8, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Schulenburg Public Library, located at 310 Simpson St. in Schulenburg.

This initiative stems from the League's Local News and Democracy project, which recognizes the vital role local newspapers play in both democratic participation and community connection in today's rapidly changing media landscape.

Community journalism empowers residents to become storytellers for their own communities, sharing local news and grassroots perspectives that complement traditional media coverage in South Cen- tral Texas.

'While our region's news- papers already provide excel lent foundational coverage, participants in this course can enrich this work. They can bring fresh perspectives, spotlight local events, and celebrate the unique voices that make our rural South Central Texas community so special,' said Janis Richardson, President of the League of Women Voters of South Central Texas.

League member Elota Patton will serve as lead instructor, with Richardson facilitating the program.

The course will feature special guests, including professional and volunteer journalists and educators from South Central Texas.

Participants will engage in practical exercises, includ ing identifying potential story ideas, conducting research, and developing an article with professional feedback.

Each session includes

hands-on writing exercises designed to build confidence and competence in community journalism.

The course is open to all, regardless of prior writing ex perience.

There is no charge to participate, but attendance at all four classes is expected. Registration is required and space is limited.

Registration is now open on the League's website – www.lwvsouthcentraltx.org.
