A gun salute using period rifles, blasted the air with smoke and fire as trib ute to the entombed soldiers on Monument Hill on Sept. 20 in La Grange.
The volley paid respects to the men who died during the Dawson Massacre of September 1842 and the Mier expedition of November 1842, which resulted in the March 1843 “black bean” incident. One hundred seventy-six Texans were ordered to pick beans from a pot. The 17 who drew black beans were executed by firing squad by Mexican Colonel Domingo Huerta in 1843.
