WALLIS — The Brazos High School football team was defeated Sept. 26 at Cougars Field in Wallis by Tidehaven High School with a final score of 56-25.
Brazos had a two touchdown lead at one point in the first half and even had the lead at halftime, but Tidehaven made adjustments and really put the offense on in the second half that ended up being too much for Brazos to withstand.
“We had a hot start and we kind of sputtered to end that second quarter,” said Brazos first-year head football coach Patrick Oliver.
“We had a chance to score after getting that onside kick and they came down and scored. Kind of stole the momentum from us going into halftime. I can’t pinpoint one single thing, it’s just a combination of plays I felt like if we would’ve executed a little bit better, we would’ve had a better chance to stay in this game.”
Brazos scored midway through the first quarter on a pass from senior quarterback Jarvse Dickerson to Luke Polasek for about 20 yards to take a 7-0 lead for the only score of the first quarter, then Tidehaven answered with a pass play of their own on an out route for 10 yards to tie the game at seven with 7:19 to go in the second quarter.
Another touchdown pass from Dickerson, this time for 55 yards a couple minutes later made it 13-7 and he later made it 19-7 on a run up the middle on his own for 25 yards as he broke tackles and ran through traffic with 1:49 to go.
Tidehaven recovered a fumble at about midfield at the 21 second mark and took advantage with a last-second touchdown as time expired on a deep ball for 49 yards to close out the half at 19-14 in favor of Brazos.
The Tigers went on a tear in the third quarter and held Brazos scoreless for the entire quarter and found the end zone at the beginning of the quarter, midway through the quarter on a five-yard run up the middle, then on a 25-yard screen pass at the 2:47 mark to take a 35-19 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Tidehaven went on to strike first in the fourth quarter as well with a 30yard touchdown pass with 10 minutes to go, which was followed by a response from Brazos on a long pass play to senior Conner Bertrand to make it 42-25 after a failed two-point conversion.
The Tigers took the following kick off for a touchdown and the final score with 1:57 to go on a quarterback run up the middle for three yards en route to a 56-25 win.
