COLUMBUS — The Columbus High School football team rolled Rogers High School in a homecoming matchup Oct. 3 by a final score of 40-7.
The Cardinals took a big lead going into halftime while holding Rogers scoreless, then coasted for the entire second half as they ran the ball a bunch and ran out clock en route to an easy win.
“I feel like we’re getting better and better,” said Columbus head football coach Matt Schobel. “We’re still kind of trying to find a little more of who we are. Things are starting to settle in. Our defense has been really, really good. That’s gonna need to continue. We’re kind of sorting it out on offense and trying to figure out exactly what we wanna be, where we wanna go. I’m proud of the kids and the way they played. They played hard, handled the homecoming stuff, and we’re looking forward to the bye week and heading into district.”
Cardinals quarterback Jack Schobel conducted the offense fluently and scored through the air as well as on the ground.
“Ever since the start of the season, we all gotta work,” Schobel said. “No matter what happens, you gotta take what you’re given.”
Columbus had a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter on a seven-yard touchdown run from Schobel in the first couple minutes, a blocked punt that was recovered by Brody Tribe for a touchdown about midway through the quarter, and a deep ball down the Rogers sideline for 41 yards at the 2:16 mark to Trey Kohleffel.
The Cardinals then drove right up the field with their run game to start the second quarter and capitalized on a pitch play to Brody Vinklarek with 8:44 to go to make it 28-0.
Columbus went on to score a few minutes later with a 64-yard touchdown from Bryan Salazar to close out the half at 34-0.
The Cardinals played conservative in the third quarter and just ran the ball as well as the clock for a scoreless third quarter, which was followed by a passing touchdown from Rogers after a strong drive with their run game at the 8:13 mark in the fourth quarter and a 21-yard touchdown run from Cardinal Amari Stovall at the two-minute mark to seal it 40-7.
