ALTAIR — The Rice High School football team was defeated by Industrial High School Oct. 17 at Raiders Field by a final score of 33-18.
Rice kept it a game for most of the contest, but Industrial was able to keep chipping away on offense throughout the game and their defense showed up when it mattered most.
“They did about what we thought they were gonna do,” said Rice head football coach Brad Dumont.
“We gave them a little wrinkle, kind of slowed them down a little bit early. They had made some adjustments, but my team played hard. We’re playing with a Thursday night squad. When you got three or four freshman and six sophomores, everybody we got is gonna be returning next year except for a couple of guys. The future’s bright. I’m very proud of the way we played. We played hard. They got a good football team, now we gotta get ready to go play Tidehaven.”
Industrial scored first at the 11:03 mark in the first
quarter, then Rice responded a few minutes later on a pass from junior quarterback Kor’Dae Johnson to junior tight end Glenn Mills to make it 7-6 in favor of Industrial on a blocked extra point.
The Cobras went on to kick a 50-yard field goal with 3:22 to go to put it at 10-6 for the final points of the first quarter.
Each team put points on the board in the second quarter as Industrial had a strong drive with their run game and capped it off with a one-yard touchdown in the first minute of the quar ter, which was followed by a quarterback run for a touchdown by Johnson at the 5:12 mark to make it 17-12 after a missed extra point for the last score of the quarter heading into halftime.
Industrial made it 25-12 later on in the third quarter with a slant route for a touchdown after another strong running drive at the 3:57 mark for the only points of the quarter.
The Cobras followed it with a 15-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter for a 33-12 scoreboard after a two-point conversion on a quarterback run to the outside right.
Mills went on to run the ball up the middle for a twoyard touchdown for Rice in the final seconds of the game for a final score of 33-18.
