Weimar football holds off Flatonia on the road

By BRIAN PIERSON Banner Press Sports FLATONIA — The Weimar High School football team went a few minutes down the street and picked up a big win vs Flatonia High School October 31 at Bulldogs Field by a final score of 21-7.

A low scoring game consisted of Weimar providing a little more offense and holding tough on defense as Flatonia started to climb back towards the end.

“They did an unbelievable job in all three phases,” said Weimar head football coach Dylan Conway on Flatonia.

“Knew that coming in just watching tape each week. Got better and better in who they were playing. They’re really well coached, they’re really well disciplined. Our kids got some lucky breaks and took advantage of some things. Kept the clock moving and just playing solid. Offensively, we’ve got some things to come back and fix. I thought our defense did an unbelievable job tonight. Just moving forward, we got to find ways each day to get better. That’s kind of the goal, but hats off to them on tonight’s performance and just glad we got out of here with a W.”

Wildcats senior running back Jerron Fisher had 65 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries while also recording 42 yards receiving to go along with a touchdown. “I felt like I ran the ball a lot harder than normal today,” Fisher said. “I had a little chip on my shoulder and had to blow some steam out.”

Flatonia still has a winning record for the season and has drastically improved from last year while still looking like a playoff team. “We played a team that’s ranked top 15-top 20 in the state,” said Flatonia head coach Matt Uzzell. “We gave them all they can handle. The problem is we did not execute on little details that require you to be successful in a game like this. There’s a thing called the middle eight. The middle eight is the last four minutes of the first half and the first four minutes of the second half. Usually if you win the middle eight, you win the game and in the middle eight today, Weimar 14 Flatonia 0. Difference in the game was the middle eight. Us going into halftime, and us coming out of halftime not ready to go.” A scoreless first quarter led to Weimar taking a commanding 14-0 lead going into halftime with one score coming in the very beginning of the quarter from Mikael Shifatu for 12 yards at the 11:52 mark, then a two yard touchdown catch from Fisher as time expired.

Fisher added his second touchdown about midway through the quarter with 8:27 to go on a 15-yard run up the middle.

Flatonia responded about seven minutes later at the 1:10 mark on a touchdown catch from Zayden Perez thrown by quarterback Jaylon Anderson to put it at 21-7.

Flatonia made some big stops on defense in the fourth quarter, but they struggled to get the offense going in another scoreless quarter for both teams, resulting in a 21-7 Weimar win.
