COLUMBUS — Welcome to a challenge. It is no longer Boy Scouts of America — but Scouts of America. The organization now offers boy and girl troops to the scouting program. This is a change in the way Scouting has been done in the past and will be a new beginning for girls in the Columbus, Eagle Lake and Weimar area.
The Columbus Noon Lions Club has sponsored Boy Scout Troop 312 for over 80 years. They have sponsored the Cub Scout Pack 312 program for 76 years and now they are going to sponsor a Girl Scout Troop 1312 program in Columbus, if there are young ladies 11-18 years of age who are interested.
The Girl Scout Troop 1312 will be offered the same events in camping, camps and many adventures.
There will be hiking, backpacking, canoeing, weekend campouts, teamwork and the list goes on.
The girls will work on rank, merit badges and offices as leaders and assistant leaders.
The program is a proven youth-driven program that has been tested and proven successful.
They begin as Scouts, then Tenderfoot, to 2nd Class to 1st Class, where they begin to see what it's all about with the troop being run by the youth, not the adults.
The trips start getting more challenging with trips to the mountains, the sea base in Florida and the boundary waters in Minnesota/ Canada on a 10-day canoe trip.
The young ladies can grow and move up in ranks to the highest goal of Eagle Scout, the top one percent and the most sought-after hires in the job market.
