FAYETTEVILLE — The Fayetteville High School girl’s basketball team had a matchup with Iola High School Nov. 25 at Lions Gym and were defeated by a final score of 48-41.
Iola led for most of the game and even though Fay - etteville was able to cut into the lead late in the game, Iola's shot-making was the biggest difference in this game.
“Iola knocked down quite a few shots,” said Fayetteville head girl’s basketball Marcus Sodek. “More than we thought they would. We adjusted some things defensively on our press.
That kind of gave them a little bit of problems. We went 15 of 27 at the free throw line, so in the grand scheme of things, we make more free throws we win the game.”
Iola had a 13-10 lead in the second quarter and a three pointer by Cambree Denham for Fayetteville tied it at 13. A couple more layups and a three pointer from Iola later in the quar ter gave them a 20-15 lead
at halftime.
Iola gained an even big - ger advantage in the third quarter by making a bunch of transition layups to put the score at 28-19.
As both teams traded punches for the rest of the quarter, Iola kept a lead of the same margin at 35-26 at the end of the third quarter.
About midway through the fourth quarter, Fayette - ville stormed back with a long three pointer from Scotti Beseda to go along with a bunch of free throws throughout the quarter.
Iola then made a layup with 2:24 to go to make it 45-40, which was followed by one more free throw from Fayetteville and Iola made a couple free throws down the stretch to seal it 48-41.
