AUSTIN COUNTY — In November, Extension Education Association (EEA) members Jessie Kokemor and Doris Glenewinkel conducted an educational leader training titled “Denim Dreams and Delightful Things.” The session was presented for local EEA members and was adapted from a program originally featured at the statewide Texas Extension Education Association (TEEA) Conference held in September. The ladies guided those in attendance through a deep exploration of denim, including its rich history, how the fabric and jeans are produced, and the evolution of denim’s role in fashion and culture. Members gained insight into the environmental impact of denim manufacturing and learned what key features to look for when purchasing new items, such as durability, fiber content, and responsible production practices.
An important component of the training encouraged members to consider sustainable fashion choices. The presenters emphasized how small decisions, such as selecting higher quality denim, repairing garments, and choosing brands with environmentally conscious practices, can help protect natural resources and reduce waste.
The program ended with the presenters sharing creative upcycling ideas. They demonstrated how old denim pieces can be transformed into useful, stylish, and functional items. Their examples inspired participants to think differently about denim that is no longer worn and to consider the value of repurposing.
