FAYETTEVILLE — The Fayetteville High School girl’s basketball team earned a big win vs Cornerstone Christian High School Dec. 5 at Lions Gym in Fayetteville by a final score of 61-41.
Fayetteville had the lead in this game from start to fin ish and ensured victory in the later part of the game by hitting some important shots in crunch time.
“We were trying to press a lot on them,” said Fayetteville head girl’s basketball coach Marcus Sodek.
“It got down to a three point game and we ended up winning by 20, so I liked the fight from my team on that.
We’ve only played maybe 10 games now with four practices under our belt, so it’s kind of starting to come together. Just kind of learning on the fly."
Lady Lions sophomore guard Scotti Beseda made some big shots later in the game when it mattered most and finished the game with 13 total points.
“For my AAU team, I’m usually a shooter,” Beseda said. “I was needed as a guard on this team, so I usually just run the plays and make shots that are needed.”
Fayetteville took a 4-0 lead in the first quarter after a layup from sophomore Paige Jurecka. This was followed by Cornerstone tying it at four on a shot near the elbow, then the Lady Lions scored three baskets in a row to take a 13-6 lead after another layup from Jurecka.
The two teams traded punches for the rest of the quarter and Fayetteville kept this same kind of lead with a three pointer to close out the end of the first quarter with a 20-11 advantage. The Lady Cougars climbed back in the second quarter with
two threes and a layup to make it 23-19, then Fayetteville re sponded with a bunch of baskets including a layup, a three pointer, and two jumpers from senior Shea Sladek to take a 32-22 lead at halftime.
Fayetteville’s lead only expanded by one point in the third quarter as Cornerstone made a couple baskets to go along with a three-pointer and the Lady Lions also made a couple baskets and a couple tough layups to take a 43-22 lead at the end of the third quarter. Cornerstone cut the deficit again in the fourth quarter and made it 43-38 on a jumper, a fast-break layup, and a free throw, then Fayetteville went on a run of their own which included a big three-pointer from Beseda with 2:30 to go to put it at 51-41.
This was followed by a couple more layups from Beseda to increase their lead and eventually win it 61-41.
