SCHULENBURG — The Schulenburg High School basketball team hosted Woodville High School from Australia on their United States Basketball Tour Dec. 12 at Shorthorns Gym in Schulenburg and won by a final score of 54-41.
This was a pretty close game for it’s majority and Schulenburg was able to get just a little more offense going when in mattered in order to get the win.
“We struggled at the La Grange tournament,” said Schulenburg head basketball coach Rich Hoogendoorn. “We won a nice overtime game Tuesday night against Bellville. We beat Sealy this morning and played pretty well. We still got a lot of football in us, but I think we’re making strides.”
Shorthorns sophomore guard Denver Carr had some big baskets in crunch time to help propel his team to victory.
“Being a leader and helping my team get points,” Carr said on his performance. “Just doing my job and listening to what coach tells me to do.”
It was back and forth in the first quarter and Schulenburg took a 10-8 lead at the end of the quar ter after a three-pointer at the top of the key from junior Nick Goode.
Schulenburg extended their lead in the second quarter and made it 23-- 11 on a three in the corner from senior Demarion Glass at the 1:25 mark, a free throw from Jayse Janda, and a couple more jump shots. Woodville responded towards the end of the quar ter with three baskets in a row to make it a 23-18 ball game at halftime in favor of Schulenburg.
Woodville continued to battle in the third quar ter and made a layup with 5:38 to go, which forced Schulenburg to call a timeout. Schulenburg hit a three-pointer in the corner at the 1:45 mark to go ahead 33-29, then the Shorthorns scored two more baskets that was responded by a Woodville basket to close out the quarter at 37-31 in favor of Schulenburg.
Woodville kept fighting in the fourth quarter and made it 42-39 after a basket midway through the quar ter, which led to Schulenburg hitting a three-pointer, an and one basket, and a layup to take a 52-41 ad vantage with about a minute and a half to go.
Another basket at the 47 second mark sealed it for Schulenburg as they cruised to a 54-41 win.
