FLATONIA — The Flatonia High School girl’s basketball team had a satisfying win vs Schulenburg High School Dec. 9 at Bulldogs Gym in Flatonia by a final score of 75-46.
Flatonia had the offense going on all cylinders and it was too much for Schulenburg to keep up with throughout the game.
“A big thing for us is just energy,” said Flatonia head girl’s basketball coach Bethany McLeod. “Usually, we start off with a press to get the energy flowing for us because it helps us push and get that move- ment flowing up and down the floor."
Lady Bulldogs senior Summer Sodek had 32 points for the night and was scoring in a bunch of different ways.
“It’s just been a lot of fun to get to play with the girls,” Sodek said on her senior year. “My best friends and just have fun together. We’re a really good team.”
Schulenburg still has a salvageable record and just needs to clean a few things up to get over the .500 mark.
“It’s an early district game,” said Schulenburg head girl’s basketball coach Richard Ramsey. “Flatonia’s what it is. They’re ranked number eight in the state for a reason. They came out and played really hard, hit some shots, and we didn’t. That’s the story of the game.”
Flatonia took a 14-2 lead in the first quarter after a fast break layup from the Sodek, then made it 21-2 on another layup from Sodek with 2:10 to go, which led to three baskets in a row from Schulenburg to cut the lead to 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. A put back layup from Flatonia’s Abbie Uzzell made it 27-9 about midway through the second quar ter and Flatonia continued to score with Schulenburg responding just enough to keep a similar deficit for a score of 42-24 at halftime.
Schulenburg senior Grace Schramek hit one free throw at the 5:47 mark in the third quarter to make it 47-30, then Sodek drove for a layup about a minute later to get the lead to 53- 32.
The Lady Horns responded with a three-pointer that was answered by Flatonia’s Kalen Scott with a transition layup and a three-pointer from Sodek eventually led to a 60-35 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Schulenburg slightly cut into the lead again in the fourth quarter, but Flatonia didn't let up and continued to put the ball in the basket for a 75-46 win.
