Fayetteville boy's hoops beats Burton by double digits

FAYETTEVILLE — The Fayetteville High School boy’s basketball team defeated Burton High School Dec. 30, 2025, at Lions Gym by a final score of 72-57.

After a double-digit lead at halftime and a comeback in the third quarter from Burton, Fayetteville really had their shot going for the rest of the game and kept their defense intact in order to pick up a solid win.

“I think the guys know what goes into it,” said Fayetteville head boy’s basketball Jake Diggs on their success. “They know the work they have to put in and what it’s gonna take to reach where we wanna get, so living in the gym, working hard, it’s all them putting in the work.”

Lions senior Jack Schley hit a bunch of shots, especially in the second half to help lead his team to victory.

“I really look to be a big part of the team, big scorer,” Schley said. “Last year, we had a lot of boys who could score. During the playoff, I really stepped it up and it made me realize this year that I need to be a big scorer and contribute a lot more.”

Fayetteville took a commanding 35-23 lead at halftime, then Burton went on a run to start the third quarter and scored nine unanswered points on a free throw, a jumper, and a three-pointer at the 5:40 mark in the third quarter to make it 35-32.

Fayetteville answered back with a run of their own and made it 42-34 after a putback layup from Enoch Loafmann, which was followed by two three-pointers, a layup, and another layup from Schley to take a 55-36 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Burton hit a three-pointer to start the third quarter, then Schley hit two three-pointers within a minute of each other to put it at 63-42 with 4:20 to go in the game.

The Lions went on to score two more quick baskets shortly after, which forced Burton to call a timeout.

Burton hit one more three-pointer at the 3:30 mark and even though they were able to slightly cut into the lead, it didn’t make a difference as Fayetteville cruised to a 72-57 win.
