WEIMAR — The Weimar High School girl’s basketball team earned a big win vs Shiner High School Jan. 9 of 54-33 at Wildcats Gym in Weimar.

Weimar had the shooting and offense going throughout the entire game and also limited the turnovers, along with playing tough defense and made it hard for Shiner to get in a rhythm offensively.

“We’re kind of a smaller team,” said Weimar head girl’s basketball coach Jenny Fricke.

“We do have one inside girl, but press is our M.O. That’s kind of how we get our energy going from start to finish. We can fly around through passing lanes. We just like to mix it up and we like our 22 press to be kind of a game control. So whether we can fly around and get steals or whether we can control the tempo of the game, it kind of leads back to our half court defense.”

Lady Wildcats guard J’Len Conn had a big scoring game and really helped the offense get in a flow in the first half with her ability to put the ball in the basket.

“I think calming down and taking it slower,” Conn said on the team’s offensive success. “Bringing it out and not rushing it. Just not going too fast pace.”

Weimar had a big lead from the very beginning and took a 12-4 lead on a fast break layup at the 2:45 mark in the first quarter. The Lady Wildcats capped off the quarter with a three-pointer and took a 18-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Weimar kept a similar lead in the second quarter as Conn made a put back layup and a free throw about midway through the quarter, then senior Madison Luckey followed it with a free throw of her own to make it 26-12 with 4:09 to go. Weimar continued to hit a bunch of shots and a few more free throws to take a 34-16 lead at halftime.

The Lady Wildcats maintained their big lead throughout the third quarter and as Shiner made a three about midway through the quarter, Weimar responded with one of their own on a pull up and put the score at 40-20 with 3:35 to go. A short basket from Shiner down on the block at the 50 second mark led to a 40-22 advantage for Weimar at the end of the third quarter.

Shiner hit a long two-pointer from the wing at the 7:40 mark in the fourth quarter, then Weimar went on a scoring spree with a few layups and a free throw to make it 47-24 with 5:44 to play in the game.

Weimar coasted for the rest of the game en route to a 54-33 win.
