ROUND TOP — The Round Top-Carmine High School girl’s basketball team picked up a huge win Jan. 16 at Cubs Gym vs Buckholts High School by a final score of 65-10.

The Cubettes dominated offensively in all facets from the very beginning and Round Top’s defense made it hard for Buckholts to put the ball in the basket, even holding Buckholts scoreless for the majority of the first quarter.

“The girls have been working really hard in practice,” said Round Top-Carmine head girl’s basketball coach Catie Weishuhn.

“After Tuesday, there’s a lot of little things they want to do better. I think we made those adjustments just from making layups and being in proper position. I thought they did a really good job of making those adjustments.”

Cubettes sophomore Hayden Kasmiersky had a bunch of baskets throughout the game, whether it was fast-break layups or making shots from around the perimeter.

“In practice, we work on kind of just getting the ball,” Kasmiersky said.

“Our coach will throw up layups. She’ll guard us so we’re stronger going up on our layups and we’ll stand on the three point line and just kind of try to anticipate passes. Just being ready for the next move.”

Round Top took a 12-0 lead to start the first quarter, which involved two layups from Kasmiersky. Buckholts went on to make one free throw at the 1:20 mark for their first point of the game, then they followed it up with a layup with 25 seconds to go for a 14-3 ball game at the end of the first quarter in favor of the Cubettes.

Round Top stretched their lead even further in the second quarter with a big quarter from Lilliana Salinas, who scored two fast break layups in a row to go along with a free throw early in the quarter to make it 22-3, which led to a pull up jumper from Bree Dooley and two baskets in a row from Madison Markwardt to put it at 32-3 with two minutes to go.

Buckholts hit another jumper in the last few seconds and Kasmiersky responded with a jumper of her own to give her team a 36-5 advantage at halftime.

Buckholts was able to score a few baskets early in the third quarter, then Round Top went on another scoring spree and had a 55-10 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Cubettes didn’t allow Buckholts to score for the rest of the game and kept a similar pace in the fourth quarter en route to a 65-10 victory.
