Schulenburg boy’s hoops thumps Louise

SCHULENBURG — The Schulenburg High School boy’s basketball team smoked Louise High School Jan. 23 at Shorthorns Gym in Schulenburg by a final score of 90-30.

Schulenburg controlled the offensive boards throughout the game and disrupted the Louise offense by playing top notch defense as they went into a press from the very start of the game.

“We got four seniors, they’re growing up,” said Schulenburg head boy’s basketball coach Rich Hoogendoorn.

“If you run our stats, we have one averaging eight, one averaging nine, one averaging 10, and two averaging 11. Pretty hard to stop that and we just moved a freshman up that’s gonna really help us I think. We’ve just been together for a while and I really think we’re gonna make a great run. I really believe it.”

Schulenburg senior Tavondrick Ellison played a big part in the win with a ton of offensive rebounds and put back layups.

My goal is go out there and get as many rebounds as I can,” Ellison said. “My job is to rebound for the team, so I try to do that as much as I can. Today, we had a little fun, so I shot as many shots as my coach let me. Normally, I’m just an inside guy though.”

Schulenburg didn’t allow a point in the first quarter and had a 22-0 lead at the end of the quarter on a couple put back layups from Ellison, a few free throws from Jayse Janda, a free throw and a layup from sophomore Adam Schramek, a free throw and a three-pointer from sophomore Victor Mandujano, and a layup at the 12 second mark from junior LJ Schindler.

Louise scored their first points of the game early in the second quarter, which was followed by an and one basket from Ellison and a euro step layup from junior Caden Herzik before Louise responded with a basket to make it 29-4 near the five minute mark.

Louise was able to score a few more points in the quarter on another basket and few more free throws, but the Shorthorns kept their offense intact with three more layups and a free throw from Ellison and some layups added from other teammates, then sophomore Denver Carr made a heave just beyond half court at the buzzer for a three-pointer that made it 49-11 at halftime.

The Shorthorns started the third quarter with an alley- oop layup from Janda, which led to another put back layup from Ellison and a free throw along with a three-pointer in the corner from senior Jay Bennett at the 5:35 mark to put the score at 60-13.

Louise was able to score a little more in the third quarter and played better defense in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t anywhere near enough with Schulenburg’s huge lead throughout the entire game as they capped off a 90-30 win.
