FAYETTEVILLE — The Fayetteville High School girl’s basketball team dominated Jan. 20 at Lions Gym and defeated Calvert High School by a final score of 60-4. This was a total blowout as Fayetteville moved the ball up court in transition for pretty much the entire game and only allowed Calvert to score a few times throughout the entire game. “Just forcing turnovers,” said Fayetteville head girl’s basketball coach Marcus Sodek on the big win.
“We’re kind of coming around with the press a little bit and they had trouble handling the ball tonight, so we took advantage of it.” Fayetteville guard Devynn Moeckel had a big scoring game with a bunch of transition baskets, tallying 18 total points for the game. “Honestly, I’ve just been practicing nonstop with my ball handling,” Moeckel said. “My coaches have really been pushing me to be better, so I’m just trying to get better for the team.”
Fayetteville started the game on a 19-0 run in the first quarter, mostly from a bunch of transition layups by Moeckel and junior guard Cambree Denham. Calvert hit a free throw for their only point of the quarter in the final seconds to result in a 19-1 scoreboard at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was very similar as Moeckel and Denham did most of the scoring and a running floater from Fayetteville junior Lainey Gromaski made it 36-3 at halftime after a put back layup from Calvert at the 2:20 mark. The Lady Lions continued to pour it on in the third quarter with a huge first few minutes from Moeckel, then a free throw with 29 seconds to go from Fayetteville sophomore Macklayla Griffin put the score at 47-3 at the end of the third quarter. Fayetteville milked the clock more in the fourth quarter and Calvert hit another free throw at the 2:17 mark for their final points of the game as it resulted in a big 60-4 win for Fayetteville.
