Lady Bulldogs fall to SA Cornerstone Christian from big second half

FLATONIA — The Flatonia High School girl’s basketball team was defeated in a close game by San Antonio Cornerstone Christian High School Jan. 30 at Bulldogs Gym in Flatonia by a final score of 67-62.

Flatonia jumped out to a big lead early that was answered in the second half by Cornerstone with fluent offense on different types of scoring such as contested baskets, fast break layups, and three pointers to gain the final edge.

“I think a big thing was their change of defense,” said Flatonia head girl’s basketball coach Bethany McLeod. “They started knocking down shots. We talked about it before the game. Zero, one, and two all three point shooters.

We knew that they could knock them down and they missed a lot in that first half, which for us helped us. In the second half, they started knocking them down.

Number one, she’s going to GCU, so great for her. She’s a great player. It was fun to play against them. It gave us a good, up tempo game to get us ready for that next step after district.”

Flatonia had a 19-0 lead at the 4:50 mark in the first quarter with most of those points coming from guards Kalen Scott, Summer Sodek, and Dani Vinklarek. Cornerstone responded with a few jumpers and some made free throws before a long three-pointer from Sodek at the top of the key in the final seconds made it 29-14 at the end of the first quarter in favor of Flatonia.

Flatonia’s lead was dwindled down a little in the second quarter, but they still kept it to double digits as Sodek had a huge quarter, making shots as well as free throws throughout it’s entirety with shots from Cornerstone to match to put it at 40-29 at halftime.

Cornerstone then went on a tear in the third quarter with a bunch of layups and a few longe range jumpers in order to take a 46-44 lead after a three pointer with 1:15 to go. A three pointer from the wing by Scott for

Flatonia in the final seconds put the scoreboard at 48-46

in favor of the Lady Bulldogs at the end of the third quarter.

Sodek hit a three-pointer and a layup early in the fourth quarter to try to give her team some momentum, but Cornerstone went on a big run midway through the quarter with a couple layups and a couple three-pointers to take a 65-58 lead after one of the made three-pointers in the corner to surge ahead 65-58, forcing Flato nia to call a timeout.

Flatonia answered back with a couple late baskets, but a fast break layup from the Lady Warriors at the thirty second mark helped secure the win at 67-62.
