and won by a final score of WEIMAR — The Weimar High School boy’s basketball team hosted Flatonia High School Feb. 6 at Wildcats Gym in Weimar 67-38.

Weimar started the game with a bunch of offense and Flatonia responded in the second quarter with some offense of their own to dwindle the lead down.

The Wildcats continued to pour it on in the second half even more, which was too much for Flatonia’s defense to withstand.

“We pride ourselves on defense, first off," said Wei mar head boy’s basketball coach Jakob Rehak.

“Last time when we played Flatonia, we had way too many inside looks from them. We knew we wanted to pack the paint tonight and make them force those outside shots. Hopefully, they don’t knock them down. You got to live that sometimes. We wanted to make sure they didn’t get layup, after layup, after layup. Last time, we gave up way too many shots inside. Secondly, just ball movement. Just open looks and open shots. Don’t force anything. When you don’t force a pass and you just move the ball freely, you get those open looks and that’s what happened tonight for us.”

Weimar junior guard Collin Morrison hit tons of three-pointers throughout the game to help give his team a big lead for the majority of the game.

“Just my teammates driving in and kicking the ball to me,” Morrison said on his success. “They got me open and dragged out the defense. I was able to knock down some shots today.”

Flatonia was very much in this game early and just needs to make some adjustments on both sides of the ball.

“We got to improve defensively as a whole team,” said Flatonia head boy’s basketball coach Lance Giese. “We didn’t quit. Weimar did make some shots there in the third quarter. They got on us, but we didn’t quit. The effort was there.”

Weimar took a 12-2 lead in the first quarter on a huge quarter from senior guard Sammy Hernandez, who made an alley-oop layup, a three-pointer, and an and one basket off the glass on a turnaround jumper at the 1:48 mark.

One free throw made from Weimar about a minute later gave the Wildcats a 13-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

A pretty evenly matched second quarter early led to a made three-pointer from Flatonia’s Abrahm Saavedra to put it at 20-15 in favor of Weimar with 2:15 to go. Hernandez finished out the quarter with two free throws in the final seconds to put the score at 24-15 at halftime.

As Flatonia still made it a game early in the third quarter, Weimar stretched their lead even more later on a layup from Wildcats senior Caleb Treece that gave them a 36-22 lead at the 4:40 mark, forcing Flatonia to call a timeout.

Another layup from Treece and a bunch of makes from Morrison throughout the rest of the quarter gave Weimar a 4729 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

The Wildcats continued to make shots and layups in the fourth quarter, adding to their lead and eventually securing the game for a 6738 win.
