Columbus Cardinals falls to East Bernard in late rally

COLUMBUS - The Columbus High School baseball team hosted a tournament this past weekend and played East Bernard High School Feb. 20 at Cardinals Field in Columbus and lost by a final score of 3-2.

East Bernard scored an early run that was answered later in the game by the Cardinals, then East Bernard was able to rally later in the game and ended up scoring the winning run on a pass ball in the last inning.

“We talked about it afterwards just making a couple plays here and there," said Columbus head baseball coach Kyle Bludau. We're close. One or two plays that we let happen in this game. Really trying to piece together some hits to come out with a win there." East Bernard had a 1-0 lead in the second inning, then they made it 2-0 on an error from a grounder in the top of the fourth inning after a double and a base hit earlier in the inning.

Columbus was able to rally in their next at bat with two base hits in order to send a runner home.

The Cardinals later tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a walk, steal, and a run scored on a pickle to tie the game at two.

East Bernard didn’t score again until the top of the seventh inning where they reached on a base hit to right center and a base hit to center in order to eventually score on a pass ball.

In Columbus’ last at bat they struck out, flew out to left center, and grounded out to second base to result in a 3-2 win for East Bernard.
