MADISONVILLE — The Fayetteville High School boy’s basketball team had a close game vs Wells High School March 3 in Madisonville and came out victorious in over- time by a final score of 80-74.
A back and forth game throughout it’s entirety led to an overtime bout and Fayetteville hitting big shots down the stretch to edge out the win.
“Wells played a heck of a game,” said Fayetteville head boy’s basketball coach Jake Diggs. "Our kids just didn't break. We've been here before
and we knew what it would take in this moment. We knew it would be a heck of a game
and a battle going in. My kids just didn't blink. They stayed
composed and got it done at the end."
Lions senior point guard Mason Fenhaus made some big shots in big moments later in the game to help get his team the victory.
“We started off a bit slow, but coach said keep shooting,” Fenhaus said. "We work harder than any team in the state and we know it. When it mattered, we made them." Wells had a 19-17 lead at the end of the first quarter, then both teams went back and forth early in the second quarter be - fore Wells went on an 11-0 run to close out the half with a three-pointer, two fast break layups, and two more baskets to take a 40-32 lead at halftime.
The Pirates kept a similar lead in the third quarter and even had a 13-point lead at 51-38 after a put back layup and a floater at about the 3:35 mark. Fayetteville responded with a few threes, an and one basket from Jack Schley, and a long three-pointer from Kole Schmitt with 40 seconds to go to put the game at 54-53 at the end of the third quarter in favor of Wells. The two teams traded punches again in the fourth quarter and the biggest lead in the quarter was a 62-57
advantage for Wells after a
three-pointer at about the five minute mark.
The Lions responded with a three-pointer from Fenhaus in the corner to make it 62-60, which was followed by a few baskets and two more threes from Fenhaus to tie the game at 71 and send it into overtime.
The Lions controlled the majority of the overtime pe riod as Fenhaus continued to find the basket with an and one layup at the 3:30 mark to put it at 74-71. A short jumper from Schley about a minute later made it 76-71, which was responded by two baskets in a row from Wells.
Fayetteville sealed the game at the free throw line in the final 30 seconds with two made from senior guard Kasen Kocian, a free throw from Fen- haus, and a free throw from ju nior guard Enoch Loafmann to win the game 80-74.
