WARDA — High winds and a downed power line sparked a fire that left several fire departments trying to contain a potential disaster fueled by dry land conditions during an outburst in the early morning of March 16, south of Warda at Whirling Pines.

A prolonged drought period has made wooded areas a potential fire hazard. Coupled with high winds, it is a recipe for disaster. Evacuation orders were issued for the areas in imminent danger. With the fire contained as of mid-morning on March 17, it re-mains a threat due to high winds. Hot spots are still being tended to as the need arises.

The Fayette County Commissioners Court reinstated a burn ban in an emergency meeting on March 16, after a series of over 10 wildfires broke out over a few day period.

Assisting the La Grange and the Winchester Volunteer Fire Departments are Fayette Electric, the Fayette County Sheriff's Office, Texas A&M Forest Service and the Fayette County Emergency Medical Service.
