AUSTIN COUNTY - Cason Cody, an eighth-grade student at Bellville Junior High and a member of Austin County 4-H, has organized a community service project to serve residents in the West End community of Austin County. Cody is currently enrolled in a statewide 4-H leadership program with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, the GLOBE Project, where he has been learning about sustainable agriculture practices, the implica-tions of poverty, and community building. As part of this program, he must complete a community service project.
Cody is organizing a volunteer event to take place on Saturday, April 11, in Industry, New Ulm, Welcome, and the surrounding areas. Registered volunteers will be assigned to teams and given simple "jobs" at residents' homes. The goal is to have several residents sign up who could use assistance with minor yard or home repairs, such as painting, yard cleanup, porch repair, door repair, and similar tasks. Cody is modeling his project after "The Big Event Day of Service" hosted by Texas A&M University each year. Cody hopes this project will one day become a way for the community to come together to serve others and connect.
