Weimar smokes Flatonia in softball

FLATONIA — The Weimar High School softball team faced Flatonia High School March 20 at Lady Bulldogs Field and won by mercy rule in five innings with a final score of

13-0.

Weimar put on a hitting clinic and made it hard for Flatonia to get any kind of offense going with their sharp pitching and tough defense.

“We’ve been focused on just staying simple,” said Weimar head softball coach Amanda Machicek. “We have a lot of kids right now that are over swinging just trying to be heroes of the game, so we told them just do your part and stay simple when you’re swinging.”

Weimar’s Sam Rangel hit two big home runs in this game and said those ar- en't her first home runs.

“On the upside of 30, maybe,” Rangel said on how many homers she’s hit in her career. Flatonia has a solid team and is still figuring things out early in the season. “I think we just need to keep working in the cages,” said Flatonia head softball coach Shane Walker. “Seeing more pitches. Just kind of get more con- fidence in ourselves. This is only our eighth game of the season, so we haven’t seen a lot of live pitching. We just got to keep getting better in the cage and hopefully it will translate into the game.”

Weimar scored three runs in the top of the first inning on two walks and a few stolen bases. They scored three more runs in their next at bat with a walk by Emma Rerich, a base hit from Taitlyn Mican, and one of Rangel’s two home runs to take a 6-0 lead. The Lady Wildcats then scored another three runs on two hit by pitches, a wild pick off throw, two base hits, and a stolen base.

Flatonia was able to get on base in the bottom of the third inning with a base hit from Keilani Mendez, but Weimar was able to get out of the inning on double up from a pop up bunt and a strikeout.

Weimar scored one run in the top of the fourth inning on a double, a pass ball, a walk, and two base hits, then added on to their lead in the very next inning with Rangel’s second home run. Faith Cantwell also hit a home run for Weimar over the left field wall to make it 13-0.

The Lady Wildcats closed out the game with a strikeout, a pop out to the pitcher, and a fly out to win the game 13-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning by mercy rule.
