The tri-county area usually has at least a few powerlifters that qualify for state, but this year there were a lot more than usual that competed at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association (THSWPA) state champi- onship finals March 18 -20
at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg.
Powerlifters that com-
peted March 18 include Ellie Hammack of Schulenburg, placed third, winning a bronze medal, in the 114 pound weight class with 285 lbs in squat, 155 lbs in bench press, and 300 lbs in deadlift, with a total of 740 points; Katry Kobza of Schulenburg, placed sev- enth in 148 pound weight class with 350 lbs in squat, 205 in bench press, and 290 in deadlift, with a to- tal of 845; Cora Brenek of Schulenburg DQ’d in the 242+ pound weight class.
In the Class 3A Division 2 of the championship finals on March 19 Betha -
ny Maldonado of Brazos,
placed fifth in the 97 weight class with 215 lbs in squat, 110 in bench press and 200 in deadlift with a total of 525; Taylor Eichelberger of Rice in the BO’d in the 114 weight class with 275 in ghe squat; Alejandra Valles of Rice, placed eighth in the 242+ weight class with 290 in squat, 200 in bench press and 275 in deadlift, with a total of 765.
Jazzmin Coleman of La Grange competed in the Class 4A Division 2 state championship final on March 20. She placed fourth in the 165 weight class with 365 lbs in squat, 215 lbs in bench press, 325 lbs in deadlift for a total of 905.
The Texas High School Powerlifting Association (THSPA) championship meet will be held March 27 and 28 at Taylor County Expo in Abeline with Kevin Ramirez of Flatonia in the 275 pound weight class in Region 4 Division 4, and Cooper Osborne of Columbus in the 3A Division 3 198 pound weight class.
