Former postal worker charged with $1.6M identity theft and check forgery scheme

DOMINIQUE TAMEZ

BASTROP — An indictment by a Bastrop County Grand Jury in December 2025 was issued against Dominique Tamez for a $1.6 million identity theft and check forgery scheme in Bastrop County. Tamez reportedly has ties to the tri-county area, including Columbus and La Grange.

Tamez, a former postal work er, stole and altered checks from

the Smithville post office and de posited them into Houston-area accounts. Tamez was arrested by the Bastrop Sheriff's Office, with

the U.S. Postal Inspection Service leading the federal investigation, which centered on complaints from victims that checks mailed at the post office were never deliv ered.

The scheme started in the sum- mer of 2023. Complaints about undelivered checks increased,

prompting an investigation by the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office

that ultimately led to a federal inquiry.

The investigation led to the Smithville Post Office and down to Tamez, who, when questioned about the thefts, implicated herself in the crimes.

The investigation points to Ta - mez being a key participant in the crime. She was arrested on Feb.

25 and booked into the Bastrop County Jail. She has since bonded out. Her pretrial hearing is set for April 1.
