La Grange girl’s soccer playoff run ends to Columbia

WHARTON — The La Grange High School girl’s soccer season has come to an end after being defeated by Columbia High School March 24 at Eddie Joseph Memorial Stadium in Wharton by a final score of 3-2.

Columbia scored two early goals in the first half and La Grange made a great effort in the second half, but Columbia scored one more insurance goal in the second half to seal the win.

The Lady Leopards put a shot on goal at the 27 and a half minute mark in the first half, which was fol lowed by Columbia controlling the ball on offense and getting a shot on goal of their own about seven minutes later.

After another shot on goal from Columbia on a long free kick at the 15:40 mark, Columbia scored a goal that went through the keeper’s legs with 14:40 to go to take a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Necks scored their second goal about two minutes later and put two more shots on goal before the half.

La Grange put an early shot on goal to start the second half, then went on to score their first goal on a corner kick deflection from freshman Raylee Gutierrez to make it 2-1.

Columbia responded with a goal just one minute later on a kick from the 25 yard line to put it at 3-1, which was followed by the two teams trading shots on goal throughout most of the half.

The Lady Leopards gave themselves a chance with another goal at the 2:23 mark from freshman Lily Banks, but it was just a little short on time as Columbia played just enough defense for the remainder of the game to escape with the 3-2 win.
