Columbus baseball thrashes Karnes City

YOAKUM — The Columbus High School baseball team defeated Karnes City High School by mercy rule in a playoff match May 1 at Bulldog Baseball Field in Yoakum with a final score of 10-0 in five innings.

Columbus put on the run support from the very start and played a clean game de- fensively to win handedly.

“When you get a win in the playoffs, that’s always a big thing,” said Columbus head baseball coach Kyle Bludau.

"I was proud of the kids.

We swung it a little better today and put it together. Played a little defense. I thought Trav did a good job. He hadn't pitched in a while. He gave us a chance from the start, so I was

proud of him. Moving on is always a fun part of the playoffs."

Cardinals pitcher Brody Tribe came in later in the game and played a part in the shoutout effort for Co- lumbus.

"Just fill up the zone," Tribe said. "I couldn't hit

my fastball but my team backed it up. They did great in the field and helped me get the win." Columbus scored seven runs in a matter four innings, then added another run on a double from Britton Wolters and two base hits.

Defensively, they only allowed a base hit in the top of the fifth inning where the runner was later picked off at first base.

They recorded their next two outs on a grounder by fielder's choice at second base, then a fly out to left field to end the inning.

In the Cardinals next at bat, they scored the rest of their runs on two base hits, a walk, a hit by pitch, and a pass ball to win it by mercy rule 10-0.
