Unveiling of Benjamin Franklin Williams historical marker

COLUMBUS — A dedication ceremony was held for a historical marker for Benjamin Franklin Williams on April 23 at the Colorado County Courthouse lawn in Columbus.

Esther Chandler, for the Colorado County Historical Commission, welcomed the crowd, Pastor Willie Mae Axel Williams said an opening prayer and the color guard was by the Challenge Academy of Eagle Lake.

Colorado County Judge Ty Prause did the honors in unveiling the historical marker with remarks by Regina Williams, president of the Colorado County Historical Commission.

Williams served his community in the 1800s as the founding pastor of Columbus’s Methodist Episcopal Church, as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention representing Colorado and Lavaca counties, as a representative in the 12th Legislature representing Colorado and Lavaca counties, 16th Legislature representing Fort Bend, Wharton, and Waller counties and the 19th Legislature representing Fort Bend and Waller counties.
