Columbus Independent School District (CISD) Superintendent Dr. Chris Carpenter, from left, takes part in the “passing the duck” with retiring Superintendent Jim Connor and Columbus Education Foundation (CEF) board members Rebecca Edmiston and Phillip Garcia at the recent Columbus Duck Derby down on the Colorado River. All were part of the big 'duck drop' of 3,500 rubber ducks from the East River Bridge into the Colorado River, which raised over $30,000. The Columbus Duck Derby event finances classroom grants for special projects for CISD teachers and scholarships for graduating seniors for trade school, colleges and universities. Cash prizes were awarded to the first three rubber ducks to reach the finish line. Jodi Sebesta won first place and $1,000, Tammie Gray placed second and received $500, and Oakley Evans finished third for $250.
