Teams to watch in high school sports 2026-27

BOYS BASKETBALL:

Fayetteville

The Fayetteville High School boys basketball team has had a ton of success in recent years and have made two recent state championship appearances with one of those appearances being last year in ’25.

This team has coaching, athletes, chemistry, and basically the entire package. What really stands out for Fayetteville is their guard play. They’re really good at distributing the ball but they’re also high-quality scorers.

They’ve graduated a few seniors, but they’ll be locked and loaded for ’26 and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them make another deep run.

Schulenburg

The Schulenburg High School boys basketball team has had a lot of success under head coach Rich Hoogendoorn.

So much success that him and his team even made a state championship appearance some years back.

In '25, Schulenburg had a slower start to the season, but they were able to figure things out as the season went on.

That’s the sign of a good coach and one who has control of the locker room. Schulenburg also has talent and they’re good at getting experience among their entire roster, whether they’re underclassmen or upperclassmen.

Rice

The Rice High School boys basketball team has made a lot of improvements over the years and a lot of credit should be given to head coach John Hunter.

Hunter has been there a while and he’s taken advantage of the athleticism he has with his players at Rice.

As noted before, Rice has great athletes in a bunch of sports, but especially basketball. The ’25 season resulted in a playoff appearance, but this team has the potential to be a state title contender with the athleticism and coach who’s been there for a good amount of time and has built his system.

FOOTBALL:

Sealy

The Sealy High School football team had a stellar season last year and it’s looking like they’re poised to have another great season, even with the graduation of senior Kane Killough to Air Force.

Head coach Clint Finley has implemented his culture and it’s paid off nicely. This team is really good at expanding the playbook and has a high-powered offense.

The question is who is going to replace Killough at quarterback, but it shouldn’t be a worry as Sealy has tons of depth and chemistry that has made them into a state championship caliber team.
