Sealy PD involved in intense standoff

SEALY — The Sealy Police Department was involved in an intense standoff July 17 at the Retreat Apartments at 1500 Highway 90 West in Sealy.

The Sealy PD received a call about a male apartment resident who threatened family members and law enforcement, which the police department is calling a personal crisis.

The police established a perimeter around the location after learning that the threatening male may have access to firearms. Attempts to contact him by phone were unsuccessful. Because officers were unable to es tablish communication with the individual, the Austin County Regional Special Response Team was called in to assist.

In the meantime, Sealy police officers coordinated with the apartment managers to ensure the safety of the residents and posted on social media urging the public to avoid the area at the time.

Upon arrival, the Special Response Team approached the residence and attempted contact. The individual refused contact with the response team, so the team deployed less-lethal devices to help resolve the incident.

After the devices were deployed, the team made contact with the resident and took him into custody without any further incident.

Law enforcement reported no injuries.

The individual was turned over to Sealy Police, who transported him to a hospital for medical and mental health evaluations.

The Austin County Sheriff's Office, Austin County ESD No. 2 Fire and EMS, DPS and the San Felipe PD responded and gave assistance.
