COLUMBUS — The League of Women Voters of South Central Texas will hold a voter education event, including hands-on voting machine practice, at the Nesbitt Memorial Library in Columbus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8.
The free, family-friendly event is part of Unite & Rise for Voting Rights, a nationwide Day of Action to mark the 61st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on Aug. 6, 1965.
Community members are welcome to stop by anytime during event hours to check or update their voter registration, ask questions about voter ID rules, vote-by-mail, curbside voting, try a hands-on mock election on the same voting machines used on Election Day and more.
Colorado County Elections Administrator Rebecca La-Course and League volunteers will be on hand to help.
Kids are welcome, too — they can take part in their own 'Vote for Your Favorite Texas Animal' mock election while the grown-ups get voter-ready.
The Columbus event is one of five Day of Action events the League is hosting on Aug. 8 at public libraries throughout its five-county service area:
• Colorado County: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Nesbitt Memorial Library, 529 Washington St., Columbus
• DeWitt County: 4 – 6 p.m., Cuero Municipal Library, 207 E. Main St., Cuero
• Fayette County: 10 a.m. – noon, Schulenburg Public Library, 310 Simpson St., Schulenburg
• Gonzales County: 1 – 3 p.m., Robert Lee Brothers, Jr. Memorial Library, 301 St. Joseph St., Gonzales
• Lavaca County: 8:30 – 10:30 a.m., Shiner Public Library, 115 E. Wolters (2nd St.), Shiner.
All events are free, open to the public, family-friendly and provide similar voter information and activities.
