Legendary Schulenburg High School boys basketball coach, Richard Hoogendoorn, resignation was accepted by the Schulenburg Independent School District Board of Trustees at their June meeting.
Hoogendoorn also coached sports such as cross country and golf at Schulenburg.
He’s most known for being the basketball coach and he was a consistent winner during his time at Schulenburg with state championship appearances in 2015 and 2021 to show for it.
If his team ever struggled to start the season, he seemed to always find a way to get his team back in winning form and salvage a good season.
Hoogendoorn also coached WWE wrestling star Mark Calaway, also known as “The Undertaker” at Texas Wesleyan University in the 1980’s.
He helped The Undertaker with a $80,000 per year contract for a pro basketball team in France, which he turned down to pursue pro wrestling.
Hoogendoorn coached at Schulenburg for 26 years and won a total of 525 games.
He has 899 wins for his career. Hoogendoorn will be known for getting the most out of his players, his humbleness, and how greatly he worked with the media.
Among other head coaching positions was the Fayetteville Lions from 1990-2000 with a record of 180-117.
Which ever school he goes to next, they will be getting a real gem.
