The Rice High School volleyball team hosted a scrimmage Aug. 7 at Raider Gym vs Weimar High School in what was a timed match at 30 minutes.
The two teams switched sides at about the halfway mark and even though Weimar seemed to have the upper hand for the majority of the match, Rice looked very much improved from years past.
“I think Weimar is looking really good to start the season off,” said Rice head volleyball coach Morgan Hunter. “We came in with the mindset that today was a practice, but a practice against a different team instead of us that we could see what our strengths are and what are weaknesses are. We’ve been talking a lot about our ball control. I feel like for the most part, at least the beginning of the scrimmage, we did pretty a good job of that. We just got to continue going through game-like scenarios. Little pieces of ways to be ready where we weren’t ready.”
Weimar has been a solid program for a good amount of time now and they showed they still have what it takes to continue to be one of the better teams in the area.
“I think on Rice’s side, they looked like they were working through some serve-receive,” said Weimar head volleyball coach Sabrina Ferguson. “Morgan’s doing a really good job of making adjustments in the game. The girls seems like they’re really receptive to her, which is nice to see from a coaching standpoint. On our side, I want for us to be more aggressive. We look like we’re afraid to take big swings right now and we shouldn’t be afraid to take big swings.”
Weimar and Rice traded a big volley early in what was a pretty even match to start.
Weimar started to cre-ate a little more offense after the 20th minute, then proceeded with a big rally in the 19th minute.
For the next ten minutes or so, both teams traded points with serves in net, kills, and balls out of bounds.
The Lady Wildcats recorded an ace at the 11:15 mark, which was followed by another ace and a few points in a row from them.
Rice was able to collect a few more points throughout the match with Weimar conducting most of the offense with a few more aces and a bunch of kills to close out the match.
