COLUMBUS — he Round Top-Carmine High School volleyball team was defeated by East Bernard High School Aug. 14 at the Marley Giddens Center in Columbus during the Kecia Davis Memorial tourna- ment by a final score of 13-25, 25-23, 21-25.
In tournament play, teams do a best of three sets format.
After struggling in the first set, the Cubettes played much better throughout the match and made things really close down the stretch.
“We had a slow start to- day in general," said Round Top-Carmine head volleyball coach Catie Weishuhn. “No excuse. That second set there, we were able to mix in a bunch of different kids and just try to get some fresh legs out there. Fight any way we can. Super proud of their fight in the second and into the third."
East Bernard started the match off strong with a 12-4 lead on a bunch of kills and a few mistakes from Round Top.
The Cubettes rallied and made it 13-9, which included two kills in a row from sophomore Cayman Nelius and a tip ball.
East Bernard regained their big lead later in the set and scored six points in a row with the winning point being an ace to close it out 25-13.
Round Top answered with a strong set of their own to start the second set with an 8-1 advantage that consisted of two aces, two tip balls, and a ball out of bounds from East Bernard.
The Cubettes maintained their big lead for the majority of the set and had it at 20-11 until East Bernard stormed back and made it 22-20 after a kill. Round Top was able keep their lead on a kill and a serve out of bounds from East Ber- nard to win the set 25-23.
East Bernard jumped out to another big lead in the third set on a bunch of kills and some mistakes from Round Top.
The Brahmanettes kept this same kind of the lead all the way until the last few points of the set as Round Top stormed back and made it 22-20 after a ball in the net from East Bernard.
A serve out of bounds from Round Top, a block, and an ace from East Bernard won the set and match 25-21.
