WALLIS - The Brazos High School volleyball team hosted Weimar High School in an area matchup August 18 at Cougars Gym in Wallis and won by a final score of 25-16, 25-14, 25-21.
Brazos dominated for most of the match and even though Weimar made it close in the final set, the Cougarettes were able to hold them off with some timely points.
'I felt like especially in that third set, we didn't give up,' said Brazos head volleyball coach Amanda Hatton. 'We kept fighting and were able to find a way to finish it in three. I was very proud of them for that.'
Brazos freshman Mya Oliver had a huge game and was a key player on offense throughout the entire contest.
'It's really fun,' Oliver said on being a freshman on varsity. 'Definitely having a big impact on the girls, building better relationships, and just giving set by hanging in for it's more to the team and more entirety and still has plenty to Brazos volleyball.' of time to get some things The Weimar Lady Cats figured out. showed a promising third 'We shifted our block inside,' said Weimar head volleyball coach Sabrina Ferguson. A tip ball from Brazos made it 7-1 in the first set and Weimar was able to hang in with an ace by freshman Kiara Alvarez to put it at 13-8 in favor of Brazos. The Cougarettes started to pull away later in the set with a bunch of kills to take a 21-11 lead, which was followed by more kills with two of them, including the final one of the set, coming from Oliver to win it 25-16.
The second set was a little more even and Weimar even came back to within a point at 10-9 after a kill. Brazos went on to score six points in a row and an ace by senior McKenna Stroud would make it 19-11. A tip ball, another ace, and a few mistakes from Weimar led to Maggie Richardson getting the set winning kill at 25-14.
Weimar started the third set with a lot of momentum as they took a 5-1 lead after a few kills and a ball out of bounds from Weimar. Brazos would eventually tie it at 12 after a bunch of mistakes from Weimar and a bunch of kills from Brazos.
Both teams went back and forth towards the end of the set until Brazos separated themselves with a few kills to win the set and match 25-21.
