FLATONIA — The Flatonia High School football team won their first game of the season against Palacios High School Aug. 28 at Bulldogs Field in Flatonia by a final score of 28-24.
This game could’ve gone either way and was a back and forth game for it’s entirety, but Flatonia was able to find ways to close out the game as time ran out.
“Some kids stepped up and made some huge plays,” said Flatonia head football coach Matt Uzzell.
“Palacios was incredibly physical. They did a great job. They played to their strengths. We just dug down on whatever the last down was and needed to get a stop and keep them inbounds and I was just saying ‘run clock, run clock, run clock’ and it ran out. It put a smile on a lot of those guys faces.”
Bulldogs freshman quarterback Boston Targac had a very productive game offensively and was making big throws throughout the entire game.
“We executed plays when it mattered,” Targac said. “Our defense held up enough for our offense to score enough and win the ball game.”
Palacios scored the first two touchdowns of the game, one being on a 25yard pass play on a roll out and throw to the front right corner of the end zone to take a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Flatonia answered at the 10:20 mark in the second quarter on a screen pass that was ran in for 10 yards by Josh Ribera.
About eight minutes later, Flatonia tied it at 14 on a run by Targac for five yards on a read-option play, then Targac followed that up with a big run down the Flatonia sideline for 78 yards to take a 21-14 lead at halftime.
Neither team scored again until there was 2:47 to play in the third quarter on a run up the middle by Palacios to tie the game at 21.
They followed that up with a 40-yard field goal
with 4:24 to go in the fourth quarter to go ahead 24-21.
Flatonia responded with a 56-yard touchdown pass down the Palacios sideline on a hitch and go route to take a 28-24 lead.
After Palacios was on their last possession in the final minute or so, they re ceived a big call on a pass interference call that set them up at about the Bulldogs 15-yard line.
As they tried to set up one last play, it was too late as time ran out and Flatonia escaped with a 28-24 win.
